Piano Masterclass on Saturday, February 2nd

We are excited to have our annual piano masterclass led by the renowned pianist, Matthew Odell. The masterclass is a perfect opportunity for our students to learn from one of the best in the field and will be held at the school.

- Time: 2:30 PM
Due to space constraints, we have a limited number of seats for the families of the masterclass participants. We have accounted for two family members per participant. Please inform your teacher as soon as possible, if you need additional seats and we will try to accommodate on a first come, first serve basis.

The entire masterclass will also be recorded. The video will be made available shortly after the masterclass, allowing everyone to benefit from Matthew Odell's expertise at their convenience.

About Matthew OdellÂ

The American pianist Matthew Odell began his studies at the age of 10 and has since won acclaim for performances of a wide range of repertoire as a solo recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and chamber musician. Â He has been hailed as âexcellentâ by the New York Times and âbrilliant ... playing with total commitment and real abandonâ by Gramophone. Â Highlights of past concert seasons include such diverse projects as Messiaenâs Des canyons aux Ă©toiles... with David Robertson and the Juilliard Orchestra for the reopening of Alice Tully Hall, a performance in the New York Philharmonicâs Stravinsky Festival, and a tour of concerts, lectures, and masterclasses in England, France, and Spain. Â Recent concerts have featured the complete solo piano works of Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter, John Adams, and Michel Merlet. Â

In addition to performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Merkin Hall, and the 92nd Street Y in New York, Mr. Odell has appeared at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and throughout Europe and Asia.

A passionate advocate of the music of our time, Mr. Odell frequently premieres works written for him. Â He has worked with many prominent composers, including Pierre Boulez, John Corigliano, Ned Rorem, Mark Adamo, Michel Merlet, and Robert Aldridge. His debut album Connections: The Piano Music of Olivier Messiaen and his Students was recently released on Albany Records.

Mr. Odell currently teaches at The Juilliard School, where he received his doctoral degree. He has also studied at the Peabody Conservatory of Music, Bob Jones University, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria and the Aspen Music School with teachers including Ann Schein, Margo Garrett, Marian Hahn, and Karl-Heinz KĂ€mmerling. The challenge for the month of February is "Sound Track from a Film or Musical Score."Â

Search for any music composed for a musicale or film by one (or more) of the following composers:
- John Williams
- Leonard Bernstein
- Ennio Morricone
- Danny Elfman
- Alan Menken

How to Participate in the Monthly Listening Challenge:
- Pick up a listening information sheet from your teacher.
- Listen to/watch the music that fits the month's criteria.
- Fill out the listening information sheet.
- Submit the completed sheet to your teacher.
- We'll tally who completes each month's criteria at the end of the school year!
If you haven't started the listening challenge yet, it's not too late to catch-up! Here is the criteria we've had since the beginning of the school year:
- September: Any Mozart composition
- October: Classical artist:
- Violin (Janine Jansen, Ray Chen, Itzhak Perlman)
- Piano (Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin, Yuka Wang)
- November: A concerto composed for your instrument
- December: Holiday recording (Tchaikovskyâs Nutcracker Suite,

Please mark your calendars with an important update: Our Spring recital date has been moved from March 23 to March 16. The recital will still be at Forte Piano, Paramus, NJ
